Letters to the Editor
MLB Playoffs Perspective
Are we allowed to feel badly that the Padres lost in the playoffs?
The G-Men played them all season, and had beaten them, but had
respect for their tenacity. They bounced back many-a-time. And we knew their players after so many games. And the Phillies? Who cares? Bryce Harper?
All I remember is that five years ago Hunter Strickland took care of business, up in Bryce's grill. Stickland v. Harper Brawl:
https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/19499351/bryce-harper-washington-nationals-suspended-four-games-hunter-strickland-san-francisco-giants-six
And since the G-Men had beaten the Pads in the final game of the regular season, I was ready to claim the crown on behalf of the
G-Men. Oh well, another opportunity was lost. Next Year!

49ers Fall to Kansas City
There were some exciting moments in this game, which made it that much more difficult to watch the Niners get waxed, 44-23, in what was a game remarkably similar to the Super Bowl loss to this same team. When an opponent scores 30 points in the second half alone,
it makes it understandable if the excitement of plays by Kittle, McCaffrey, Deebo and others are not the memorable
moments of this contest.
I'm not sure what the discussions are at halftime, but motivation is probably not a priority, nor is how to shore up the Defense.
They need to be added to the agenda.
For those who might wish to find a memorable 49ers moment,
the first half is your best bet.

After midnight, Friday morning, the Carolina Panthers announced they had traded Christian McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers. Later 49ers' coach Kyle Shanahan was, 'Still up in the air,' whether McCaffrey would play on Sunday vs. the Chiefs but indeed he did, acquitting himself nicely with a team-high eight carries for 38 yards and two catches for 24 yards. The Texas Rangers announced on Friday they reached an agreement to hire Bruce Bochy as their next manager. The longtime San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants manager agreed to a three-year contract which runs through the 2025 season. Bochy is pictured above at the Giants’ 2019 FanFest. The California Golden Bears (3-4, 1-3) played host to the Washington Huskies (6-2, 3-2) at FTX Field at California Memorial Stadium in Berkeley on Saturday evening, October 22. Cal’s offense was ineffectual initially but held the high-scoring Huskies to a 6-0 lead at half time. Above, Cal freshman running sensation Jaydn Ott (#6) gained only 38 net yards for the game.

With most of Cal’s defense positioned to block a Washington Hail Mary attempt right before halftime, Cal co-captain and safety Daniel Scott (#32) delivered the hit to disrupt the pass and knock the ball to the ground.

Giants Forever!
by Bill Hool
Thirty years ago I brought my new wife to San Francisco. She had lived on a small island in East Asia. I wanted her to experience AMERICA so I took her to a Giants game at Candlestick. It was the sixties and, as I best remember, was between Los Angeles at season’s end, which meant they would or might not move to the playoffs. It was in the last of the ninth when someone hit a walk-off home run and the sell-out crowd went nuts. Hearing 40,000-plus fans screaming in that much joy was impressive. She became a Giants fan!

Putila becomes the 10th GM in Giants history since the Giants moved to San Francisco in 1958 joining Chub Feeney (1947-1969), Horace Stoneham (1970-1975), Spec Richardson (1976-1981), Tom Haller (1981-1985), Al Rosen (1986-1992), Bob Quinn (1993-1996), Brian Sabean (1996-2015), Bobby Evans (2015-2018) and Scott Harris (2019-2022).
“We’re all excited to have Pete joining our Baseball Operations leadership team”, said Zaidi. “Pete has a stellar reputation in the industry as a creative thinker and strong collaborator, and we view him as a seamless fit with our culture of embracing a growth mindset on and off the field. We’ve prioritized player development up to and including the major leagues, and Pete’s experience and thought leadership in this space will be a tremendous asset as we continue to strengthen our talent pipeline and build a sustainable winner

These A's prospects turned heads in 2022
by Martin Gallegos
In the two years prior to their previous run of success from 2018-21, the A’s began to generate optimism about the future with the cultivation of future stars such as Matt Chapman, Matt Olson and Sean Murphy at the Minor League level. Five years later, a similar promising wave appears to be forming.
Shea Langeliers, who began 2022 ranked as Oakland’s No. 1 prospect, received his first call to the big leagues in August. Finishing the year slashing .275/.370/.600 with three homers, four doubles and nine RBIs in his final 12 games with the A’s, the catcher showed major flashes of his potential both offensively and behind the plate over the final two months of the season.

Walter Gordon was Cal’s first football All-American, selected third team in 1918 by Walter Camp | |
|
Early and Prominent Black Leader is Recognized
by Dave Newhouse
| |
In saluting Black sports trailblazers such as Jackie Robinson,
Bill Russell and Frank Robinson, sadly Walter Gordon is forgotten.
Jackie Robinson broke baseball’s color barrier, Russell became the NBA’s first Black coach, and Frank Robinson was Major League Baseball’s first Black manager.
Gordon achieved an impressive number of firsts, and not just athletically, but overlooked regardless.
The reason why, perhaps, is that Gordon’s sports heyday occurred more than 100 years ago, and locally. It wasn’t until much later that his star rose nationally, though, even then, he wasn’t as noticed publicly.
Nonetheless, his amazing life story needs to be told, or retold, and Doug Harris is just the documentarian to make this happen. Gordon’s remarkable life is the basis of Berkeley native Harris’ 25th documentary, but this one is slightly different from the previous 24.
“He was the first person I’ve filmed to break down discrimination barriers,” Harris explained. “He had to be the first to walk through doors.”
Many doors, but let’s start at the beginning, the UC Berkley campus, where the Gordon legacy began. He was a West Coast collegiate boxing and wrestling champion, and a ferocious tackling lineman who became Cal’s first football All-American, selected third team in 1918 by Walter Camp, the officially recognized All-American selector of that era.
Gordon then became an assistant coach and chief scout on Andy Smith’s famed Cal Wonder Teams of the 1920s, which didn’t lose a game for five years. Gordon coached at Cal from 1919 to 1943. During this time period, he became in 1922 the first Black law school graduate at Cal’s Boalt Hall, while founding Cal’s Alpha Phi Alpha Black fraternity chapter.
If not busy enough, Gordon was a Berkeley policeman in the evening — the only Black on the force — while attending law school in the daytime. He fought against discrimination by breaking down doors, and yet faced it himself, being omitted from Cal football media guides by Smith, and using his fists to defend himself against racial slurring during his 10 years as a night patrolman.
He quit policing to practice law full time, and that’s when Governor Earl Warren — Gordon’s boxing mate at Cal and future United States Supreme Court justice — appointed him to California’s Parole Board. Then as president of the NAACP’s East Bay chapter, Gordon worked with activist C.L. Dellums to break down racist practices in local employment.
The ever-evolving Gordon became vice-president of the Lawyer’s Guild of San Francisco, a rare Black member of the prestigious Commonwealth Club, and then chairman of the California Adult Authority in 1944.
How many American sports heroes get to run an island? Gordon, a Republican, was named governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands in 1955, appointed by President Dwight Eisenhower. Gordon later served as a district court judge there before returning to Berkeley in 1968. In 1975, his athletic star shone again as he was named to the College Football Hall of Fame. He died a year later at 81.
Documentarian Harris thus had considerable background to work with, but that’s his general approach. “With the popularity of documentaries on mainstream television,” he said, “they leave out people who the masses don’t know about.”
People such as hoops pioneer Don Barksdale, gay baseball player Glenn Burke, and Byron Rumford, who championed fair employment and fair housing, and now Walter Gordon, all of them Black.
"That man deserves a statue of him at Memorial Stadium,” Harris said of Gordon.
In the interim, Harris is continuing his work on the Gordon documentary, and will present a preview of this project at 7 p.m. Friday at Cal’s International House, plus a tribute at the next day's Cal-Oregon game in Strawberry Canyon.
Those interested in learning more about the Gordon project, or wishing to contribute, can check out the website at www.dougharrismedia.com.

Stars On Ice -- From the Autograph Collection of Richard Yee

Stars On Ice comes to the San Francisco Bay Area once a year. This incredible family-friendly skating show gives the audience a chance to see Olympic medalists and superstars perform their routines live and in-person.
The lineup of skaters changes annually depending on who’s available and keeps the show fresh. In addition to the world class performances, the skaters always take the time to meet and chat with the audience after the shows. I purchased this photo during the break and was fortunate enough to have all of the skaters sign it after the show.
The skaters from the 2015 show include: Meryl Davis - 1 Olympic Gold, 1 Olympic Silver, 1 Olympic Bronze; Charlie White - 1 Olympic Gold, 1 Olympic Silver, 1 Olympic Bronze; Evan Lysacek - 1 Olympic Gold; Patrick Chan - 1 Olympic Gold, 2 Olympic Silver; Tanith Belbin - 1 Olympic Silver; Ben Agusto - 1 Olympic Silver; Ekaterina Gordeeva - 1 Olympic Gold; Joannie Rochette - 1 Olympic Bronze; Kimmie Meissner - World Champion; Ryan Bradley - US National Champion; Sinead Kerr - European Champion; John Kerr - European Champion.

Autographs by Richard Petty

By Rudi Petschek
Richard Petty’s autograph is sensational, and belongs at the head of Richard Yee’s collection. (Sports Today #453). I wonder which of Petty’s autographs Yee treasures. My favorite is the third one.
| |
After a race, Petty would remain at the track signing autographs, sometimes for a couple of hours, usually being among the last ones to leave the racetrack. Whenever his car broke down during a race he would insist it be repaired, if only sufficiently to circulate slowly, so that whoever won that race could feel good about having beaten Richard Petty on track!
He was a folksy, modest wise man. Whenever he crashed and reporters asked him what happened, he never made excuses, “I got behind on my steering,” or he would refer to the driver having screwed up.
When his grandson was killed in a race, Richard pronounced: “You don’t put a question mark where the Good Lord has put a period.”
More Petty quotes:
“There is no doubt about precisely when folks began racing each other in automobiles. It was the day they built the second automobile.”
“If you ain't trying to cheat a little, you ain't likely to win much.”

Oakland Moves On, Advances to Round Two of the USL Championship Playoffs
For the second time in as many years, Oakland Roots played spoiler in the first round of the USL Championship playoffs, upsetting the second-seeded San Diego Loyal by a score of 3 to 0.
The home side threatened early, but Paul Blanchette was up for the challenge, smartly saving a dangerously whipped free kick just outside of the 18-yard box. Despite the pressure from Loyal, it was Oakland who struck first. Charlie Dennis opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a half-volleyed laser into the top corner, sending the Roots bench into raptures. Oakland went into the half one goal to the good, setting the stage for a memorable night in Southern California.
Roots would pick up where they left off in the 52nd minute. Lindo Mfeka capitalized on a loose Loyal back pass, squeezing the ball over goalkeeper Koke Vegas and tapping in to give Roots a two-goal advantage, just six minutes after the break. Loyal went down to 9 men in the 75th minute, as both Thomas Amang and Alejandro Guido were handed their marching orders after a confrontation. The double-sending off ended any fleeting hope for a Loyal comeback, and a calmly slotted Fissore finish in the 91st minute put the icing on the cake.
Oakland Roots now head to San Antonio Friday night to take on the number one overall seed San Antonio FC, on October 28th at 5:30 PM PT.

Former Cal Basketball Player Rod Benson Makes Painting Of Football Legends Marshawn Lynch And Justin Forsett
by Jonathan Okanes
When former Cal basketball player Rod Benson was asked to make a painting of former Golden Bear football stars Marshawn Lynch and Justin Forsett, he wasn't just flattered that someone was interested in his talents.
It was who was doing the flattering that made an extra impact.
"It wasn't only validating to myself as an artist, but you're going to get a sense of pride that you are doing something if it gets the attention of the University of California, Berkeley," Benson said. "I hadn't felt that connection in a long time."

Women's Soccer Dominates No. 21 Portland
on Senior Day
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's soccer went out and dominated No. 21 Portland in a 4-0 win as part of Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
From the opening whistle, it was the Broncos (9-6-1, 6-0) who were in control. They were constantly in the attacking third and finally broke through on a header from Karly Reeves off a corner from Colby Barnett in the 29th. Less than three and-a-half minutes later, Farrah Walters scored a beautiful goal, assisted by Isabel Dehakiz and Marisa Bubnis, to add on to the lead and just before halftime, Izzy D'Aquila scored her 17th of the year on Barnett's second assist of the day. Santa Clara wasn't done as Cianna Elmazaj put an exclamation point on the game with a goal in the 77th off a long ball from Alyssa Bourgeois.
The Pilots (9-2-4, 3-2 WCC) were on their heels and didn't get a shot off until the 70th minute. Their lone shot on target came in the 85th. It was just the second time this season they had given up more than two goals.

FIELD OF PLAY
For the past 60 years, Michael Zagaris has taken his camera behind the scenes of the NFL, capturing the moments that define America’s game. With unparalleled access—42 Super Bowls, 49 seasons as team photographer for the San Francisco 49ers, and a behind-the-scenes passport to the rest of the NFL—Zagaris takes his aim beyond the field and to the locker room, the bench, the practices, and the training camps. His intimate portraits convey the nerves, the tension, the pain, and the elation with emotional depth and the clarity of a longtime insider.
With contributions from celebrated Hall of Famers Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott, and Fred Biletnikoff, as well as text from renowned sportswriter Steve Cassady and sociologist Dr. Harry Edwards, Field of Play highlights Zagaris’s storied career as a photographer, showcasing the irresistible force of football and celebrates its enduring presence.

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.
Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and 4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
